Treatment for Eye Inflammation at Eyes Over Copley

You've probably experienced some kind of pain, inflammation or another discomfort in your eye at some point in your life -- enough to understand how debilitating this supposedly minor issue can be. But some kinds of eye inflammation go beyond pain to cause serious vision issues, including permanent vision loss if they are left undiagnosed and untreated. The category of eye inflammation known as uveitis can seriously damage your quality of life without a skilled care. Fortunately, you can get the sight-saving care you need from our own Dr. Fox here at Eyes Over Copley.

Understanding Uveitis

Uveitis is named after an eye structure called the uvea, which encompasses the outer dimensions of the eye in three layers. The iris, the colored "shutter" that controls levels of incoming light, is one such layer. Another layer, the ciliary body, sits behind the white of the eye, where it holds the lens in place, assists ion focus accommodation, and secretes the eye's aqueous fluid. The third layer, the choroid, supplies the retina with the blood supply it needs to function and thrive normally. Uveitis refers to an inflammation of any of these layers. It may take the form of:

  • Anterior uveitis, also known as iritis, which afflicts the iris
  • Intermediate uveitis, or inflammation of the ciliary body
  • Posterior uveitis, or inflammation of the choroid

Uveitis can be caused by an astonishingly long list of triggers, underlying conditions, and predispositions, from rheumatoid arthritis, sexually-transmitted viruses and ulcerative colitis to psoriasis and even tuberculosis. Symptoms of uveitis may include pain and redness in the eye, light sensitivity, blurred or otherwise low vision, and small, annoying specks called "floaters" that drift through your line of sight, temporarily obscuring vision. It's worth noting that all of these symptoms can also be caused by other possible eye ailments; the only way to know whether you have uveitis or something else is to visit our clinic for a thorough eye exam.

Treatment Recommendations From Our Boston Optometrist

Early treatment for uveitis is extremely important, since the earlier you get the condition under control, the less chance of your experiencing long-term vision problems. Our Boston optometrist can examine both the front structures and the retina of the eye to look for telltale abnormalities. Other lab tests can help pinpoint any underlying medical cause for your uveitis. Depending on the type and severity of the disease, treatment recommendations may include:

  • Medicated eye drops such as corticosteroids
  • Injectable or oral medications
  • Immunosuppressive drug therapy
  • Implanted devices that release medication slowly into the eye
  • Removal of some of the eye's vitreous, the gel-like substance inside the eyeball
